SCOTLAND RETURNS

For the first time this century, Scotland returns to the FIFA World Cup. Here's why it matters and why we're uncorking the good stuff.

MORE THAN A GAME

For Scotland, football is more than a game. It's a source of pride and national sporting identity carried across generations. The FIFA World Cup showcases the highest level of competitive football. Scotland's history with the tournament runs deep: first appearing in 1954 with five consecutive appearances between 1974 and 1990, and one more in 1998. Then came the dark years. For nearly three decades, Scotland has been absent from the world’s biggest stage, and with it, a piece of national identity has felt out of reach. An entire generation has grown up without its nation competing among the best. That all ends this month. At long last, Scotland is making a historic return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time this century. The return isn’t just about football, it’s about a nation reclaiming its own pride. And with it, Scotland's legion of supporters, The Tartan Army, is finally back where it belongs.

A LONG TIME COMING

• The first-ever international football match took place in Scotland against England in 1873.

• Hampden Park in Glasgow was once the largest football stadium in the world, drawing crowds over 149,000 for Scotland matches in the 1930s.

• The oldest surviving football in the world was found at Stirling Castle and dates back to the 1540s.

• Scottish legend Denis Law is still the country's only player to ever win the Ballon d’Or (1964), awarded to the best footballer in Europe.

• Current captain John McGinn is just ten goals away from becoming Scotland's highest goal scorer of all time.

1998

The last time Scotland played on football’s biggest stage, there was no social media, no international space station, no Euro currency, and Google was still a startup. Safe to say this celebration is long overdue.

THE TARTAN ARMY

Scotland is the only nation in the world to have a fanbase as famous as their squad. The Tartan Army is considered one of the most respected fan groups in world football, so much so that they’ve won awards for fair play and sportsmanship at major tournaments.
